What does your role involve?

I provide engineering support to Operations during the setup up of the beetroot and soup production lines within the Speyside factory, and I am responsible for the delivery of efficient line changeovers. If there is an issue on the production line I will attend to ensure lines keep running whilst supporting the other maintenance engineers when faced with more complex issues. I carry out engineering improvement project and play a supporting role to the Line Technicians to help improve their skill base.

Have you always been in this role or have you had any other roles at Baxters?

I began my career as a Factory Operator in the Fray Bentos packing production line, before progressing to become the Leading Hand for that production line. I was then selected to apply a line technician role, and was successful in my application. This was a stepping stone for me to join the apprenticeship program.

What attracted you to this role and Baxters?

I have always been interested in Engineering and was keen to learn and progress within the field.

What do you like about working at Baxters?

The close working relationships throughout the factory and the support from the Engineering team that helps me progress.

What’s the most interesting aspect of your job?

Always learning something new, no two days are the same. I’m learning to adapt and work in different ways, whilst learning from the existing maintenance team.

Have you received any training & development?

Yes – I’ve received on the job training from experienced engineers over the past 5 years. I’m studying at UHI Moray doing a Modern Apprenticeship in Engineering.

What are the benefits of taking on an apprenticeship?

It helps to develop your skills further within an industry you are passionate about. Teamwork, learning how to take responsibility for your own work and learning from experienced engineers on the job is a bonus.

What support have you received from Baxters taking on your apprenticeship?

Support comes from all members of the Engineering team especially my supervisor Andy Summers, who always encourages me to get involved with issues on the line or projects within the factory.

How have you found support from your senior colleagues?

Baxters Engineers are always willing to help expand my knowledge whether it’s during a task or when I’m working on improvements. As this is a multi-skilled role, the team are keen for me to improve my knowledge of all aspects of engineering including mechanical and electrical engineering principles. I’m learning while developing my skills in electrical work, mechanical fitting and welding.

Would you recommend a hybrid work/study approach to others

Although it is a lot of hard work, it makes the role more enjoyable, combining the theory and practical together helps you to advance in the industry at a good pace.

What are your ambitions?

To become a qualified Engineer at Baxters and to continue to improve my engineering skills and knowledge.

Has taking on an apprenticeship aligned with your career goals?

Yes, it has helped to start my career within engineering.

What are your interests and hobbies away from work?

I enjoy D.I.Y, and I also like cooking for friends and family. I am also learning how to play the guitar.
